what the fuck, claremont?!

This needs to be addressed.

The following Police Report was in my mailox:

"Between the hours of 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 9, 2004, a car belonging to a faculty member from CMC was vandalized in the parking lot at 6th and Amherst. The windows were broken, the tires were slashed, and the body of the vehicle was spray painted with various racial and homophobic epithets."

It continues about how the perps will be brought to justice.

My friend Taylor was walking to Pomona from Pitzer across the CMC campus, and saw the car.
The "racial and homophobic epithets" were words like "nigger lover," "bitch," and "kyke".

This is fucking unacceptable.

I don't have the right mind nor the adequate time to address this in full right now. An appropriate post regarding this deserves my full attention and devotion.

But honestly.
First there was the "Cross Burning Incident".
I did not take the incident that seriously, only because it seemed to me like a bunch of ignorant dumb drunk kids doing dumb things. (Background: Over winter break, some intoxicated students stole another student's artwork from a courtyard, took it up to the Harvey Mudd campus, then burned it. The artwork was a cloth-covered object shaped like a cross. The students who burned the "cross" came forward and admitted it, but also said they meant no significance...it was a drunken act of EXTREME stupidity.) However, the Claremont College community reacted to the "Cross Burning Incident" with vigor...almost too much vigor. There was a protest and multiple forums. I understand the complexity of the issue, and I don't mean to say that it should have been ignored. But it was just...extreme.

And then last week someone wrote "nigger" across the face of George Washington Carver on a Calendar.
And now this.

WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON?!
It seems as thought racism and hate is RISING after the cross burning incident. People are getting attention!
And meanwhile, on a side remark, the Claremont Colleges are very selective about what they publicize. After all, hateful words about Christians are brushed off; a girl's car windows were bashed in because of a Bush bumper sticker and this got no attention.

It's going to far, and I don't like it. This pisses me off. This is my school.

PEOPLE NEED TO CALM THE FUCK DOWN.

I really don't understand it. It's easy to say that it's because hatred and racism are widespread, nobody is sensitive enough, people are apathetic, etc. etc., but I think things like this are happening more often at the Claremont Colleges than elsewhere. I didn't hear about a single hate-related incident of vandalism at Bellevue, and that was definitely a less sensitive community.

Is it possible that the sensitivity of the community here is the reason why things like this are happening?

I don't know. Obviously things like this are disturbing and flat-out unacceptable, but I think it's even more disturbing that the entire community seems to be going into a downward spiral rather than picking itself up and getting on with life.

If things progress any farther I will probably transfer. I can't accept being accused of racism for the sole reason that I don't go on a crusade every time something offends me. I'm honestly starting to wish I had gone to UCLA...

That's pretty crazy. Thankfully everyone at Oxy is too fucking lazy to care about controversial / racist issues.

Incidentally, how did you change the comment line with a free account?

I'm hoping that's referring to the alliteration in that sentence, and not the fact that a girl's car was vandalized for her political beliefs.
